Paulino Masip

Biography

Paulino Masip (11 May 1899 – 21 September 1963) was a Spanish writer, playwright, journalist, and screenwriter of the Generation of '27. Born in La Granadella, Lleida, Spain, he worked as a journalist and editor in Spain before going into exile in Mexico in 1939 following the Spanish Civil War. He became a Mexican citizen in 1941.

In Mexico, Masip devoted much of his career to screenwriting, writing more than fifty scripts for Mexican cinema from 1941 onward. His credits included El barbero prodigioso (1941), El verdugo de Sevilla (1942), La barraca (1944), Jalisco canta en Sevilla (1948), Crimen y castigo (1950), Ahí viene Martín Corona (1951), and Escuela de vagabundos (1954). He frequently collaborated with prominent Mexican filmmakers, adapting literary and theatrical works as well as writing original screenplays. Alongside his film work, he continued writing novels, short stories, and plays, including El diario de Hamlet García (1944), considered one of the notable novels of the Spanish Republican exile. He died in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, on 21 September 1963.
