Shruti Haasan

Biography

Shruti Haasan is an Indian actress, playback singer, and musician who predominantly works in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi cinema. Born on January 28, 1986, in Madras (present-day Chennai), Tamil Nadu, she is the elder daughter of acclaimed actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur. She studied psychology at St. Andrew's College in Mumbai before moving to California to study music at the Musicians Institute.

After starting out as a child playback singer and making a brief appearance in *Hey Ram* (2000), she made her adult acting debut with the Hindi action thriller *Luck* (2009). She gained widespread recognition in South Indian cinema with *Anaganaga O Dheerudu* (2011) and *7 Aum Arivu* (2011), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South. She established herself as a leading star with massive commercial successes, including *Gabbar Singh* (2012), *3* (2012), *Balupu* (2013), *Yevadu* (2014), *Race Gurram* (2014), *Srimanthudu* (2015), *Premam* (2016), *Krack* (2021), *Waltair Veerayya* (2023), *Veera Simha Reddy* (2023), *Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire* (2023), and *Coolie* (2025). She also featured in Hindi titles like *D-Day* (2013) and *Welcome Back* (2015), as well as the American action drama series *Treadstone* (2019).

An accomplished vocalist and composer, she composed the soundtrack for *Unnaipol Oruvan* (2009) and fronted her own alternative rock band, The Extramentals. Over her career, she has received two Filmfare Awards South (including Best Actress – Telugu for *Race Gurram*) and multiple South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) across acting and playback singing categories.
