I watched Hi! On Zee5 today. Honestly I did not like this film. What begins as a standard, uninspired run-of-the-mill romantic comedy quickly spirals into a toxic, narratively bankrupt ordeal. The films asks the audience to root for a protagonist whose actions cross the line from bumbling immaturity straight into outright manipulation, psychological coercion, and criminal behavior.
The central conflict conflict relies on a fabricated pregnancy lie—a tired, manipulative trope. However, the film takes a genuinely disturbing turn when Mayil and his friend physically assault and imprison his maternal uncle just to cover up the deception. Framing kidnapping and assault as comedic or romantic hurdles is an insult to basic story integrity. The story reaches peak absurdity with the mother's backstory, where she supposedly abandoned her family because she was branded a "bad omen" and chose to live as an ascetic. Instead of offering a meaningful emotional anchor, this backstory feels archaic, manipulative, and completely unearned. Characters shift motivations at the whim of convenience. Mayil’s sudden moral awakening feels unearned after he spent the majority of the story orchestrating lies and confining family members against their will. Similarly, the rushed resolution relies on contrived coincidences and clunky exposition dumps rather than organic character growth. Because both main characters spend most of the story lying, manipulating, or avoiding one another, their eventual romantic reunion lacks any genuine chemistry or emotional payoff. It was an exhausting watch for me.
Prabhu Ganesan, whom I have always rated high as an actor, is solid playing the role of Devayani's father. Radhika Sharathkumar is convincing as Mayil's mother, while Nayanatara brings joy playing the role of Devayani. The actor who played the role of Mayil is an actor named Kavin, who has a lot to improve.
Overall for me, this film was a complete misfire from start to finish. I am not revisiting this film again.
My Rating: 0.5/5 or 1/10
