It's always a shame when you can see the potential in something but it never quite gets there. Monster movies don't have to be about the monster.

In order to build attention for a horror movie, you have to establish characters that you can relate to and invest in. If you don't, then it's just a piece of plastic mask that you're showing in front of the camera and asking people to be scared of it. If the characters are afraid, then it translates to the audience. This movie establishes a lot of colorful characters that you can get invested… read the rest.

If you don't, then it's just a piece of plastic mask that you're showing in front of the camera and asking people to be scared of it. If the characters are afraid, then it translates to the audience. This movie establishes a lot of colorful characters that you can get invested in and while it doesn't land perfectly on every shot, it does build itself to be a good movie. The monster is used sparingly enough so that you don't get bored of it and its reveals are not poorly constructed. I really enjoyed this slow burn of a monster flick that did call backs to similar movies from the 60s and earlier. And I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes movies of that era.
