Less concerned with conventional narrative coherence than emotional and visual immersion, the film unfolds with the unstable rhythm of a hallucination.

The imagery often feels simultaneously intimate and alien — particularly through Yves Tumor’s hypnotic performance as Atom, a cosmic observer and glam-rock phantom who drifts through the film delivering cryptic narration and ominous predictions. As Tumor’s film debut, the role feels almost uncannily suited to their artistic persona, allowing the musician’s shape-shifting mystique to become one of the film’s most compelling and destabilizing forces.

Rosado and his collaborators have cited Jodorowsky's **THE HOLY MOUNTAIN** (1973) as a major influence on **MATADOR BOLERO**, and the comparison proves useful in navigating the film’s surrealist imagery and symbolic density. Yet the finished product also evokes the fractured psychosexual nightmare logic of Lynch's **INLAND EMPIRE**, particularly in its collapsing sense of identity, performance, and reality itself.

Shot on Super 8mm, Rosado effectively exploits the imperfections of the format, creating an atmosphere that feels equal parts underground art film and sleazy 1970s exploitation picture. The grainy retro-exploitation aesthetic becomes essential to the film’s immersive power, evoking the grime and sensual decay of a forgotten grindhouse relic discovered somewhere in the margins of New York’s cabaret underworld.

Centered around the unsolved murder of an actress, the film uses its mystery framework as an entry point into a wider exploration of fantasy, fragmented identity, fertility, female autonomy, and the voyeuristic objectification of women’s bodies. Like its dream logic structure, the film rarely offers easy interpretation; instead, it invites viewers to surrender to mood, texture, and sensation -- much like a Jodorowsky film.
