Beach Heart (2021)

Overview

This animation came about during my time at my parent’s home in Corner Brook, Newfoundland in July and August, 2021. While there, I worked remotely on part-time contracts, helped to clean out my mother’s belongings after her passing seven months earlier, and retreated to the seaside whenever I had time. Throughout the pandemic I became increasingly homesick for Newfoundland, and in particular, for the sea and coastline. Living in Montreal and navigating day-to-day life with social distancing and limited travel to other provinces left me with an uneasy longing to connect not only to people, but to the land, rocks, and water. The coves and bays I visited became sites of refuge, places of reflection and hope as I walked along many of my mother’s favorite sites in and around the Bay of Islands. Beach Heart is a love letter to my mother and to the sea and sky, from Corner Brook to Bottle Cove.
