I really want to dislike Ricky Gervais but actually he's pretty good at what he does. There's a 'post alternative' aspect of British comedy that Brent (and Gervais more generally) bandwagons. The alternative comedy scene of the 80s was an alternative to the racist, homophobic, mysoginist "jokes" that preceded it.
